Power-Over-Ethernet Extenders (PoE)

Power-Over-Ethernet Extenders (PoE)

You know how you want to put your security camera or Wi-Fi extender in that perfect spot, but it’s just too far for your regular internet cable? That’s the disappointing limit of standard Ethernet, usually around 100 metres.
Enter PoE extenders, your tech solution. They make use of a single cable to deliver super-fast Internet and power, avoiding the need for extra power outlets, complex wiring, and extra costs.

What are PoE Extenders?

PoE Extenders are devices that allow you to extend reach of an Ethernet network device beyond the basic 100 metres Ethernet cable limit. They help bypass the maximum length limit of Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a Ethernet cables, making them a more reliable means of data transmission. Additionally, it provides power to devices like IP cameras, wireless access points, and VoIP phones. It enables one RJ45 cable to provide both data connection and electric power to the Powered Devices (PDs)) instead of having a separate cable for each.

How PoE Extenders work

  • They first receive incoming signals from a source, like a PoE switch or injector. The signals carry both electrical power and data over the same Ethernet cable.
  • They regenerate data packets that have been degraded and weakened over distance, and amplifies them back to their original strength.
  • They forward the electrical power along the cable while consuming as minimal energy as it can to function, ensuring the PDs receive sufficient power. It essentially acts as a relay for the DC power.
  • The extender transmits both the regenerated data signal and power through its “PoE Out” port.
  • This outgoing signal is now strong enough to travel another 100 meters to the powered device or to a “PoE In” of another PoE extender (daisy-chaining).

Benefits of PoE Extenders

  • Extended Reach: Allows you to deploy PoE devices like VoIP phones, wireless access points, IP cameras, access control systems and IoT devices in locations previously inaccessible due to distance limitations.
  • Cost Effective: Avoids the need for extra power outlets or complex wiring.
  • Simplified Installation: Makes use of plug-and-play operation, making deployment quick and easy.

Things to Keep in Mind

When getting a PoE extender, keep these under consideration:

  • PoE Standards and Compatibility: Ensure that the PoE source, extender, and powered device are compatible with the same standard.
  • Power Budget: Although extenders consume minimal power, calculating total power budget irs essential, especially when daisy-chaining.
  • Cable Quality: High quality Ethernet cables (Cat5e, Cat6, or higher) are crucial for optimal performance, especially over extended distances.

Final Thoughts

In modern networking, PoE extenders are indispensable tools as they are able to overcome distance limitations of Ethernet cabling. They ensure that the powered devices can be deployed, regardless of distance from the main network switch.
